History

History

Solway Car Club was founded in 1957, when a group of enthusiasts first met in the Royal Hotel in Castle Douglas and established the common aim of enjoying their shared interest in motor sport and in competing against each other.

A prime mover in the early days was the local doctor; Peter Kerr, and he was the President of the Club for 25 years before retiring and handing the Presidency to another founder member, Ron Smith, who carried on the tradition until his untimely demise in 2001 after 20 years of entertaining the membership with his tales of members deeds and misdeeds (some true, some not-so-true) in his Dinner Dance Speech.

From the outset, Solway Car Club has always enjoyed diversity in the activities of its members, and can lay claim to many motorsport achievements in rallying, racing, autocross, karting and navigation, but the principal motivation of the Club has thankfully not changed – raw enthusiasm and enjoyment of all things mechanical and speed-related.

In 2014, we were delighted to be awarded ‘MSA Club of the Year‘ by our governing body, the Motorsport Association (now Motorsport UK).
